Roy Archer

Getting to know roy and margaret – the people behind a legacy gift

Longfield Community Hospice was fortunate to recently receive a gift from the late Roy Archer

Roy was not known to the hospice team and meeting Royโ€™s daughter Jane was a pleasure as she was able to give us an insight into her dad, Roy, and her mum, Margaret.

Roy and Margaret lived in Cirencester for many years and were an integral part of the town. Both were members of the church and various other clubs. Roy was a bowls club member until he moved to Chichester in 2020, following the death of Margaret. He was described by the club as,โ€™โ€ฆ a true gentlemen of the club, and was often heard to announce before he left that he was the oldest member at that time.โ€™

Meeting Jane and her husband was fantastic as they were able to tell us about Roy & Margaret, stories of them. What came out of listening to Jane was how much they cared for their community and now with their passing, their legacy will continue to help care for others by the support Longfield Hospice gives to the people across Gloucestershire. Neither Longfield nor Jane fully understand the reasons why Roy & Margaret decided to give a legacy to the hospice, but we believe it may be that they experienced a neighbour receive hospice at home care, and this made a lasting impression.

Jane had not visited the hospice before and at the end of the visit having heard about the work Longfield delivers through its Wellbeing Centre, its counselling and hospice at home services she said, โ€˜I could not have wished for the money to go to a better cause.โ€™
