Local Hospice Charity launches new Sibling Grief Support Group

A new sibling grief support group being launched at Longfield Community Hospice for young adults aged between 18-25 years old.

The new group starts on 18 June to 9 July on a Tuesday evening from 6-8pm and is a 4-week programme, with the next programme planned from 23 July – 13 August.

The groups are open to anyone aged between 18-25 bereaved by the death of a sibling regardless of how long ago they have lost someone.

The structure for the 4 weeks will look at sharing of experiences, remembering our siblings and looking at how to carry them into the future, creative aspects of the course include music playlists and letter writing– all within a small, safe supportive group.

Penny West, counsellor at Longfield, said: “It can be a very lonely journey, with some really complicated emotions that can be hard for others to understand so being alongside other siblings who just “get it” is invaluable.

The loss of a sibling will change the course of your life forever, often we are known as the forgotten mourners, our grief can be overshadowed by the grief of other family members such as parents. Finding others to connect with that understand is very difficult, yes there are books, online resources but very few groups specifically for sibling loss, this group offers an opportunity to be in a small, safe, supportive place with others wanting to remember their siblings & acknowledge the pain of their loss with a focus on keeping their memory alive”.

All group sessions are facilitated by a trained counsellor.
