3 minutes with our amazing volunteer, Carla.

Why Longfield?

I live locally so I’m aware of Longfield’s great reputation in the community. I’m a counselling student and my college tutors speak highly of the counselling placements offered here, as well as the brilliant support that students get while on placement.

Why is counselling so important?

Volunteering at Longfield has special meaning for me as I have experienced bereavement and I sought counselling to help me navigate my grief. I know first-hand how much counselling helped me. I feel very privileged to be able to support others on their journey of grief.

How often do you volunteer?

I come to Longfield on a Wednesday and a Friday morning and see up to three clients a week. I also help with the assessments when I get free time.

What’s been your most memorable day so far?

Each time I think I have had my most memorable day with Longfield, I have another one! From the privileges of client work to the amazing counselling team, every visit is memorable and no day is the same. I love the sense of comradery and feel supported by the counselling team and especially my manager, Lena, who supports me whilst allowing me to have autonomy as a student and navigate my own way.

What’s the most rewarding part of placement?

To meet a patient, a carer or someone who’s been bereaved and sit alongside them at this extremely difficult and emotional time in their life is a privilege. To be able to offer a safe and trusting relationship for them to navigate these emotions is so rewarding.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about volunteering with us?
