John’s story

When John’s wife, Fran, was diagnosed with kidney cancer, we were there. John is leaving Longfield a gift in his Will, so we can be there for more families who need us.

“After her diagnosis, Fran came to Longfield for reflexology and art classes. There was always a lovely lunch too. When she came home, she felt better – more energised. She was well for a few years before her treatment stopped working.

Fran’s wish was to die at home, so I moved heaven and earth to make that happen. But at the end, I had nothing left. I was getting up three, four, five times a night. That’s when the Longfield care team came in. They were just wonderful, absolutely wonderful. It gave me a break and chance to just sit with Fran. I’m so grateful for the support we got. 

A few months after Fran died, one of the team called to ask how I was feeling. “I could burst into tears just talking to you now,” was my reply. The nurse recommended I come back to Longfield for counselling, so I gave it a go. It didn’t take the grief away, but it helped me let go of some painful emotions.

Today, I volunteer for Longfield and I’ve left a legacy in my Will to the hospice. It’s a way for me and Fran to help other people – it meant so much to us.”
