Angela Takes on Icelandic Trek to Raise Funds for Longfield Community Hospice

Angela Currier-Teal is embarking on a bold and chilly adventure to support a cause close to her heart. This week, Angela is setting off to Iceland, where she will trek across breathtaking snowy landscapes and icy terrains—all to raise vital funds for Longfield Community Hospice.

Angela’s journey is inspired by the compassionate care she and her late husband, Ben, received from Longfield during his battle with cancer. Reflecting on her motivation, Angela said: “I just wanted to give something back.”

Ben was diagnosed with mouth cancer in 2009, and within a year, surgery left him unable to speak. He communicated through sign language until his death in 2015. Throughout his illness, the team at Longfield provided invaluable support not only to Ben but also to Angela, offering her much-needed counselling through their Wellbeing Centre.

“I had never engaged in counselling before,” Angela explained. “But I was under immense stress. I went to my doctor at breaking point and was signed off work for four months. That’s when I reached out to Longfield for help.”

A Crown Servant in support of the Armed Forces, Angela was accustomed to a “stiff upper lip” approach to emotions. But at Longfield, she found a safe space to begin healing. When I met the counsellor, I described myself as a jigsaw puzzle—broken and scattered. I had to put the picture back together.”

Now, Angela is channelling her gratitude into action, taking on this Icelandic challenge to raise awareness and funds so that Longfield can continue supporting families facing similar journeys.
